The Fletcher Jones Languages and Cultures (FJLC) Resource Center is a unique space dedicated to supporting in-person and virtual language and culture learning and intercultural exchange among local and international students and members of our extended community.

Our Mission

Our mission is guided by the belief that language learning, intercultural understanding, and cross-cultural dialogue are crucial components in the education of a global citizenry. Our approach to language and cultural learning is rooted not only in dialogue across borders, but importantly through an abiding connection to the diverse local communities of Southern California.

The Fletcher Jones Languages and Cultures Resource Center houses a computer lab prepared to support both independent learning and language classes, and a culture lab that provides a space for face-to-face and virtual interaction in language classes, community-based language programs, and other events.

Student Fellows

The FJLC Resource Center Fellows support our community events.

Our Conversation Programs

Spanish

The Spanish Conversation program is a vital piece of our integrative, community-based language learning model. Our Conversation Leaders and Tutors are native speakers of Spanish, trained to help our beginning and intermediate-level students practice the language in a relaxed setting through games, activities, and conversation.

Conversation groups take place as part of our lower-division classes. Students in our Spanish 1, 2, 22, and 33 classes meet weekly in small groups led by one of our Conversation Leaders.

Portuguese

Our Portuguese Conversation program is led by our Brazilian Portuguese Fulbright Teaching Assistants. These recent college graduates come from all over Brazil each year to support students in their language learning process through weekly conversation hours, lunch tables, and programming that showcases the cultural diversity of Brazil.

Spanish, French, and Portuguese Tutoring

The Center offers language tutoring provided by Pitzer College students. The tutoring schedule is updated every semester.

Weekly Language Conversation Tables

Our Spanish, French, and Portuguese Conversation Tables meet for lunch on Wednesdays in the McConnell Private Dining Room (aka “the Fishbowl”). These events are open to any member of the community (students, faculty, and staff) who wants to participate in a relaxed conversation and practice their target language.

Events

The Center hosts academic and co-curricular events such as the Spanish Capstone Presentations, the International Student Speaker Series, movie nights, language mixers, and others. Our FJLC Resource Center Fellows assist with academic events and organize student-led events that enrich and extend the language and culture learning of our programs.
